Alcohol Abuse

alcoholic
"With Friends like these who needs Enemies?"

ALCOHOL ABUSE is drinking alcohol to the point that it leads to dysfunction in a person's ability to perform normally in school or their job, and interact normally with their friends and family.

Alcohol abuse is more common in males than females.

It leads to poor school or job performance, neglect of responsibilities and personal hygiene, legal tangles, accidents, and downward social drift.

A person dependant on alcohol finds it difficult to hold down a job and increasingly their next drink becomes the only focus of their thoughts at the expense of all other aspects of their life. It is a form of drug addiction.

A simple set of questions can help you to spot an alcoholic called 'CAGE'. Ask if:

  • Have you ever tried to CUTBACK on your drinking?
  • Do you feel ANGRY when your friends or family suggest you stop drinking alcohol?
  • Do you at times feel GUILTY at the amount of alcohol you're drinking?
  • Do you start your morning with an EYE-OPENER?

A yes to all the above questions with symptoms of alcohol withdrawal suggests a person with an alcohol problem who needs help.
