Vitamin and Mineral RDA Explained

VITAMIN AND MINERALs are needed in small quantities by the human body for growth, maintenance, and well being. They are needed in your diet because they can't be made by your body.

Of the vitamins, some dissolve in water and other dissolve in fat/oil. This is important because the fat dissolvable types can be stored by the body in its fat layer (A, D, E, K) while the water dissolvable vitamins cannot be, so need to be eaten often (B complex, C).

Minerals come from rocks. Plants absorb them through their roots and pass them on to us when we eat them.

The US recommended daily allowance (RDA) is the scientifically determined amount of these substances that the average person needs in their daily diet to be healthy.

A balanced diet should be able to provide a full RDA spectrum but some authorities believe that overused soils, and current farming practises, has led to weak produce with substandard amounts of these essential vitamins and minerals. Our stressful lifestyles further increases our requirements. The logic behind one a day multivitamin/mineral supplements is to replenish any dietary deficiencies without having to eat more food.
