Healthy Diet

For a HEALTHY DIET try:

  • Reducing Saturated Fats: Eat lean meat and remove obvious fat and skin from chicken; choose low fat dairy products; use unsaturated oils (olive, rape seed, or sunflower); eat fish rich in omega oils (mackerel, herring, pilchards, salmon); and use walnuts and soya protein - both shown to lower cholesterol. Saturated fat over time leads to deposition in blood vessels and resulting in heart attacks and strokes.
  • Eat less refined Sugar: causes tooth decay, obesity and diabetes. Try fruits to add sweetness; and use low sugar drinks.
  • Eat lots of Fruit and Fibre: Aim for 5 servings of either a day. Fibre is crunchy vegetables or whole grains.
  • Use less Salt: try herbs to add flavor instead.

Your largest diet servings should be fruits, vegetables, potatoes, whole grains, and cereals. Meats, eggs and cheeses are next, followed by sugary or fatty foods.

Remember that to be really healthy you need a healthy lifestyle. Healthy diet is just one aspect of this. Regular exercise, limited alcohol, no smoking, wearing seatbelts and other safety measures are just as important.
