Who is the World's Youngest Doctor?

by Dr.Sal MD on author

Young Dr. Balamurali Ambati

That claim to fame would go to the wunderkind Dr. Balamurali Ambati who became a medical doctor able to write prescriptions before reaching legal drinking age. In 1995, at age 17, he graduated from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine as an MD then later specialized in ophthalmology at Harvard University.

The son of East Indian immigrants, his father, an industrial engineer, and mother, a math teacher, moved from India to New York when Balamurali was three. By age four he is reported to have been doing rudimentary calculus. The standard education path for students is six years of elementary, three of junior high, three of high school, and college for three years. Balamurali skipped over each of these hurdles in just two years.

At time of writing Dr. Ambati is a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Utah. His brother Jayakrishna is also a medical doctor.
