BPH stands for Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy. BPH means age related enlargement of the prostate gland by natural causes. The prostate gland is at the base of the penis deep to the pubic bone. Both semen and urine flow merge here before passing into the penis. Males have a prostate. Females do not.

BPH Cause

The prostate gland is testosterone responsive. BPH is caused by the prostate gland growing in responce to male hormone over a lifetime. By about age 50 it often is big enough to block the flow of your urine.

Diagnosis of BPH

• PSA blood test reading within normal limits for age.
• Digital rectal exam with a swollen feeling symmetrical prostate.

Both tests are done in conjunction to confirm a diagnosis of BPH to exclude prostate cancer as the cause of prostate enlargement.

BPH Treatment

• Mild to moderate cases of BPH are treated chemically with medications that dilate the urine tube muscle passing through the prostate gland.

• Severe cases of BPH are treated surgically by reaming through the narrowed prostate passage widening it. This is called a BPH TURP.
• Severe BPH in persons unable to withstand surgery may be treated with indwelling by pass catheters changed weekly.
