NPO Medical Term

The NPO Medical Term means nothing by mouth. The NPO term is commonly used to denote nothing to eat and drink overnight before scheduled surgery the next morning in hospitals. Being "npo" during surgery is important to prevent regurgitation and inhaling in stomach contents which can causes post operative aspiration pneumonia.
